উৎপল দত্তের টিনের তলোয়ার নাটকের ভেতরে প্রাবন্ধিক খুঁজে বের করেন বাংলার তথাকথিত উনিশ শতকের নবজাগরণের ক্রিটিক। আলোচিত হয় উপনিবেশের থিয়েটারের হনুকৃত পরিসর ও তার ভানসর্বস্বতা। 

Utpal Dutt not only revealed the conditions of actors/actresses of private commercial theater in the backdrop of the late 19th C. mercantile capitalism or the creative endeavor preconditioned by the private sponsorship, he also unveiled the overall political economy of the then Bengal. The narrative of the play, “tiner taloar” has toppled down the notion of much proclaimed Bengal Renaissance, which itself is a mimicry of its European counterpart. Utpal Dutt’s concept of revolutionary theatre also played a planned self-avowed role through the metaphor of irreal sword used in ‘realistic’ theater. Thus, this n-layered play has achieved the distinctive features of epic theater.
